Hello Reader A few months ago, I started working with a new client who was referred to me by someone I used to work with. Her biggest complaint was that she was always bloated and felt that she looked pregnant. To top it off, she was also constipated. This all started about a year before she met with me. During her initial consultation, we were discussing her health goals (one of which was to lose weight) and she said that since she started working with her personal trainer, she made it a point to ensure she had 140 grams of protein a day. Prior to this, she never tracked her food nor her protein intake. She was exercising four to five times a week, following her trainer's recommendations. Everywhere she looked on social media, fitness and health influencers were giving the same advice: "If you want to build lean muscle, fix your hormones, and burn fat, you must hit your protein target every single day." Determined to lose weight, she did what any committed person would do. She pushed herself to hit that high number every day. Drinking whey protein shakes, eating cold chicken breasts on the go, and snacking on processed high-protein bars packed with artificial sweeteners. On paper, her macros were "perfect." In reality, her body was struggling to cope. She was constantly bloated, her stomach hurt, and she was constipated, going days without a proper bowel movement, which made her feel heavy. Instead of feeling strong and energised, she felt sluggish, uncomfortable in her gym clothes, and utterly frustrated. On the bright side, she acknowledged that she was losing weight, about one kilo a month. The Missing Equation She was trapped in a common modern health oversight: she was focusing entirely on what went into her mouth, with no thought for what her body could actually break down. High-protein foods, especially dense meats, isolated protein powders, and heavily processed protein snacks, are naturally heavy, complex, and slow to digest. In Ayurveda, your digestive system relies entirely on your Agni, which is your internal metabolic fire. Think of your Agni like a campfire. If you pile a massive, heavy log onto a small, flickering flame, you will not get a bigger fire. You will simply smother the flame entirely, creating thick, dark smoke. When she forced high volumes of dense protein into a stressed, rushed digestive system, her Agni was being smothered. These are all classic signs that her body was not producing enough hydrochloric acid or digestive enzymes to break down the excess protein. Instead of being absorbed to build muscle and support her tissue layers (Dhatus), that undigested protein sat in her digestive tract, fermenting and decaying.
And because regular bowel movements are the body's primary way of clearing out used hormones, her severe constipation meant that metabolised oestrogen was getting reabsorbed back into her bloodstream, further disrupting her cycle. The Shift From Force to Absorption I did not tell Maya to give up on her fitness goals or completely abandon her protein intake. We simply shifted the focus from forcing macros to maximising absorption doing these three main things:
After a few weeks of these changes, her constipation completely resolved. Her stomach stayed flat throughout the day, she was full of energy again, and her gym workouts felt lighter and more powerful. Truth is that she did not need to hit an arbitrary, internet-recommended protein number to thrive. She just needed a digestive system capable of turning her food into true vitality. Hello Reader This week, we are looking at one of the most important, yet frequently overlooked, pieces of the metabolic puzzle: the gut-thyroid axis. Generally, an overactive immune system is often triggered deep within the gut. What is Really Happening Did you know that over 70% of thyroid slowness stems from an autoimmune response, most commonly known as Hashimoto’s? Your thyroid gland and your gut barrier are in constant communication. When your gut lining becomes irritated or porous,...
Hello Reader This week, we are looking at the intimate, yet hidden partnership between your stress response and your thyroid, which is known as the thyroid-adrenal axis. If you feel completely exhausted despite sleeping eight hours, find that minor stress knocks you out for days, or feel like your metabolism has hit an invisible brick wall, then your body is deliberately pulling its own metabolic emergency brake to protect you from burning out. What is Really Happening Your adrenal and...
Hello Reader As we step into October and the days begin to feel noticeably cooler, we are turning our focus to your body’s metabolic engine: your thyroid, which can sometimes struggle in the cold. If you find yourself struggling with afternoon slowness or feeling like your metabolism has suddenly shifted into slow motion, your body is simply struggling to convert its cellular fuel in the cold. This week, we are looking at why "normal" blood tests can miss the mark and how to ignite your...
