Catching every cold

Hello Reader

I often hear from clients about how they catch every bug going around despite going to the gym and eating healthy. However, keeping your immune system strong is not eating specific foods or taking any particular supplement. Your immune system needs balance and consistency with diet and lifestyle. Therefore, let's focus on the top immune system myths and how to be resilient from within.

Myth 1: Taking High-Dose Supplements Will Boost Immunity

Reality: While vitamins and minerals are essential for immune function, megadoses of supplements do not equate to better immunity. In fact, excessive intake of certain vitamins, like vitamin A and vitamin D, can have adverse effects and compromise immune health. Optimal immune function is about balance, achieved through a varied and nutrient-rich diet. Supplements are designed to support nutrition but they cannot do all the work alone. And remember, it is quite easy to over-supplement so do have regular blood tests if you are taking high doses of any nutritional supplement.

Myth 2: Sugar Weakens the Immune System

Reality: While excessive sugar intake isn’t beneficial for overall health, the idea that a single food, like sugar, significantly weakens the immune system is an oversimplification. The body's response to sugar is more nuanced. A consistently poor diet high in sugar, alongside other unhealthy habits, can impact immune function over time. However, moderation is key, and a balanced diet is essential for immune resilience. Having dessert once a week will not weaken your immune system.

Myth 3: "Boosting" Immunity Overnight is Possible

Reality: Contrary to popular belief, quick-fix solutions or miracle foods that instantly strengthen the immune system don't exist. Building a robust immune system is a continuous process that involves consistent healthy habits, including balanced nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. It's a cumulative effect over time, not an instant solution. If you do get ill, see it as a sign to slow down, get some rest and look within to see what dietary and lifestyle changes need to be made.

Myth 4: Having a Perfect Diet Means that it is Impossible to Get Sick

Reality: The myth that maintaining a perfect diet equates to an impenetrable shield against illness is a common misconception. While a nourishing diet is undeniably crucial for supporting immune health, having a strong immune system doesn't guarantee complete immunity from illnesses. The immune system is intricate and influenced by numerous factors beyond just diet, including genetics, stress levels, sleep quality, hygiene practices, environmental factors, and overall lifestyle. Despite consuming a nutrient-rich diet, exposure to pathogens and viruses is inevitable. However, a robust immune system supported by a healthy diet can potentially lessen the severity and duration of illnesses, contributing to a quicker recovery. Striving for a balanced diet alongside other healthy habits remains pivotal in fortifying the body's defenses against various health challenges.

Myth 5: Immune-Boosting Foods Work Miracles

Reality: No single food can miraculously "boost" your immune system. Rather, it's the collective intake of a variety of nutrient-dense foods that contributes to overall immune function. Eating a rainbow of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats provides the body with the necessary nutrients to support immune health.

I would encourage you to focus on a diverse and nutrient-rich diet, along with other healthy lifestyle habits, which can help foster a resilient immune system over time.

Hello Reader I have never followed the latest "fads" whether it comes to fashion or health. One of my personal mottos is not only to keep things simple, but also just because "everyone else is doing it" does not mean that I have to do it. Health trends can actually be quite dangerous! Especially since so many people are out there giving nutrition advice and they are not qualified to do so. Did you know that if you are taking any sort of immunosuppressants, you cannot take probiotics in the...

Hello Reader As the New Year approaches, it’s impossible to ignore the flurry of “new year, new you” wellness content flooding social media, inboxes, and even casual conversations. I've seen influencers with no health background or qualifications promoting various medical tests, supplements, and all sorts of programmes. (Its disgusting to say the least!). Promises of rapid weight loss, quick detoxes, miracle superfoods, and shortcuts to perfect health are everywhere. Unfortunately, much of...

Hello Reader As we approach the new year, lets forget the resolutions and go straight pass the "new year new you" jargon. Did you actually know that December is one of the busiest times of the year for me? Not January. Why? Here is why... But let me ask you this first. As we approach the holiday season, are you feeling your best? Or is there room for improvement? Do you have plenty of energy? How is your digestion? Your sleep? And how are your stress levels? Are you feeling great in all of...
