Hello Reader I have never followed the latest "fads" whether it comes to fashion or health. One of my personal mottos is not only to keep things simple, but also just because "everyone else is doing it" does not mean that I have to do it. Health trends can actually be quite dangerous! Especially since so many people are out there giving nutrition advice and they are not qualified to do so. Did you know that if you are taking any sort of immunosuppressants, you cannot take probiotics in the form of a supplement especially without supervision and specific individualised guidance? Did you know that children should NOT take a multi-vitamin that contains iron UNLESS they are medically advised to do so? Did you know that if you are experiencing diarrhoea, you should not take any supplement with vitamin C in it? Did you know that high doses of omega-3 supplements can increase the risk of bleeding, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications? Did you know that taking activated charcoal as a supplement can interfere with the absorption of medications and nutrients? There is so much misinformation about there, so today I wanted to share with you another misguided trend that I have started seeing again. People (including yoga teachers and "health influencers") are promoting copper water bottles or incorrectly stating that Ayurveda recommends it. Therefore, I wanted to clarify that you should not be drinking water from a copper water bottle throughout the day. If you are going to use any copper vessel, here is what you need to know: 💧 For its health benefits, you should only have a maximum of 2 cups a day (each cup being no more than about 250 ml) of water from a copper vessel. This way you will balance all three doshas (Vata-Pitta-Kapha) 💧 The water should be left in the container for about 8 hours to reap the benefits. The best time of the days to drink copper water is in the morning and in the evening before bed 💧 If you drink copper water all day long as part of your 2 litres of water a day, you are risking too high levels of copper, which can be toxic for your body and comes with a variety of uncomfortable symptoms ranging anywhere from constipation, infertility, mood swings, depression, memory problems, and even hypothyroidism to name just a few 💧 As with every Ayurvedic recommendation, everything should be done in moderation 💧 Do not add anything else to your water when drinking out of a copper mug as it can cause adverse reactions 💧 Make sure the quality of copper you get is of the highest and pure quality 💧 Lastly and one of the most important points is that you should only have two glasses of copper water a day for a maximum of 3 months and then take a break for 1 month before resuming again There have been reported cases of copper toxicity after the use of copper water bottles, so do be careful. And remember, just because something is sold does not always have to mean that it is good for you. Do your research. The best drinking vessels are still those such as stainless steel (100%), glass, or ceramic. At the very least, do not reuse plastic water bottles and if you purchase any other material for a water bottle, do make sure that it is BPA and Phthalate free. Aluminium water bottles are also NOT recommended as they are often coated with a resin that can leach into water and can cause digestive discomfort. What do you use to drink water from?
