Gut and hormonal health

Hello Reader

Before I go into today's topic, one of my students that I am supervising needs your help with her research for her dissertation. If you meet the criteria to participate, please do take some time to help her out. Here is a message from her:

My name is Manasi Mahesh Tagade, and I am an MSc Nutrition, Health and Wellbeing student at the University of West London. I am currently conducting research for my dissertation on how social media influences health perceptions and consumption of Moringa and Matcha drinks among South Asian women living in London.
I am looking for participants who are women aged 18 or over, identify as South Asian, live in London, and consume Moringa and/or Matcha drinks.
The questionnaire takes approximately 15–20 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be treated confidentially and used only for this dissertation.
Thank you for your time and support.

Now onto today's topic...

Imagine sitting down at your kitchen table after a long day to have a home-cooked meal. As you finish eating, your stomach feels heavy, your trousers feel too tight, and suddenly you feel completely drained. You start looking up your symptoms online and suddenly, you see advertisements for all the supplements that will get rid of your symptoms.

It is so easy to fall into the trap of buying gut health supplements based on clever marketing or a well-meaning recommendation. But our digestion is not an algorithm to be hacked with a quick pill.

In Ayurveda, digestion is centred around your Agni, your digestive fire. When your Agni is burning brightly, your body smoothly transforms food into vital energy, clarity, and that healthy internal glow. But when life gets stressful, chaotic or your life feels imbalanced, that fire weakens. Food is not processed efficiently, which is turned in Ama, which means metabolic sludge or undigested impurities in Ayurveda.

Here is the connection that so many miss: Your gut health and your hormonal health are deeply intertwined.

When Ama builds up in a sluggish gut, it directly impacts your liver and your microbiome's ability to process and clear out used hormones like oestrogen. Instead of being safely eliminated, excess hormones recirculate back into your bloodstream. This leads to sudden afternoon fatigue, stubborn weight shifts, brain fog, and unpredictable cycles.

Following on from last week's newsletter about supplements, here are supplements that support digestive and hormonal health.

Kindling the Fire

Rather than relying on harsh quick fixes, traditional Ayurvedic medicine approaches the gut by honouring the body's natural intelligence:

  • Triphala: Made from three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki), this classic blend combines sour, bitter, and astringent tastes. Rather than acting as a harsh laxative, it gently tones the intestinal tissues, clears accumulated Ama, and supports regular elimination so your liver can safely clear out excess hormones.
  • Trikatu: A warming blend of Black Pepper, Long Pepper, and Dried Ginger, Trikatu is rich in the pungent taste. It is specifically designed to wake up a sluggish and damp digestive fire. By stimulating digestive juices, it helps break down heavy meals before the bloating and sluggishness sets in.

Assisting the Cellular Work

While traditional herbs help reawaken your body's innate intelligence, modern clinical nutrition provides the direct biochemical support needed to keep things moving smoothly:

  • Digestive Enzymes: Chronic stress and rushing through meals act like a wet blanket on your stomach's natural enzyme production. High-quality digestive enzymes assist your body in breaking down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, taking the immediate burden off your system so you do not feel heavy right after eating.
  • Prebiotics: Think of prebiotics as the essential nourishment for your beneficial gut bacteria. Found naturally in foods like garlic, onions, and green apples, these non-digestible fibres feed the microbes that produce short-chain fatty acids, which are the fuel that keeps your gut barrier strong and healthy.
  • Probiotics: High-quality, targeted probiotics introduce beneficial microbes to keep your gut microbiome balanced and diverse. A healthy, diverse microbiome is critical for your estrobolome, the specific group of gut bacteria responsible for metabolising your body's oestrogen.

Before you reach for another bottle, remember these simple rules to protect your gut and your hormones:

  1. Natural Does not Mean Harmless: Potent herbs and concentrated bacterial strains interact directly with your biochemistry. Just because a supplement is herbal or available over the counter does not mean it is automatically safe for your unique body type.
  2. Always Check for Contraindications: If you are managing hormonal conditions like PCOS/PMOS, or taking prescribed medications, always work with a qualified professional to ensure your supplements are not working against one another.

Hello Reader Now that we have covered the foundation of inflammation and hormones, PCOS, and perimenopause, it is time to cover menopause itself. Menopause is officially marked by a full year without a period and this is where the hormonal landscape shifts permanently. In wellness culture, menopause is often framed purely as an aging issue or something that is challenging to navigate. But the truth is, the way you feel post-menopause comes down to how well you protect your brain, bones, and...

Hello Reader Happy Monday! If you have hit your late 30s or are in your 40s and suddenly feel like your body is on fire, waking up with aching joints, sudden brain fog, skin sensitivity, or unexpected anxiety, then you are not losing your mind. You are experiencing the perimenopause flare. For decades, oestrogen acted as your body’s natural, built-in anti-inflammatory shield. As oestrogen levels begin to fluctuate and drop during perimenopause, that shield is pulled away and that can lead to...
