Red Flags with herbal remedies

Hello Reader

Before I get into today's newsletter, I wanted to mention that my student still needs more people to participate in her survey about how social media influences health perceptions and consumption of Moringa and Matcha drinks among South Asian women living in London. If you meet the eligibility criteria, please do take some time to complete the survey to support her research:

Now, as a nutritionist, lecturer, and researcher, do you know what really scares me?

Imagine walking into a clinic, explaining your health struggles, and being handed a plain paper pouch or an unlabelled glass tincture bottle. The practitioner smiles, hands you the concoction, and simply instructs: "Take two teaspoons in hot water twice a day before meals."

You ask what it is, and they give you a vague answer about a "special traditional blend" or "secret herbal formula."

It is this exact scenario that scares me.

Every year, well-meaning individuals who are simply seeking relief from chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, or digestive issues put their trust in alternative practitioners who conceal the identity of the herbs they "prescribe." You are sent home with mystery powders, teas, and tinctures in which you are completely in the dark about what you are putting into your body.

In modern healthcare, whether conventional or integrative, this practice is not just outdated; it is a profound safety risk and a massive red flag.

"Natural" Does Not Mean Safe

One of my most dangerous myths in the health and wellness industry is that herbs and supplements are inherently gentle and incapable of causing harm.

In both clinical nutrition and traditional systems like Ayurveda, herbs are respected as potent, active medicine. They contain complex biochemical compounds that interact directly with your liver, kidneys, cardiovascular system, and endocrine pathways. When chosen correctly, herbs can be remarkably healing. But when taken blindly, they carry real risks.

When a practitioner hands you an unlabelled mixture, you have no way of knowing:

  • The exact botanical names of the ingredients (which is crucial, as different species of the same plant family have vastly different effects).
  • The concentration or dosage of the active compounds.
  • The presence of potential heavy metals, fillers, or unlisted additives.

The Contraindication Crisis

What makes mystery herbs even more alarming is that many practitioners distribute them without performing a thorough safety check against your existing health routine.

If you are currently taking prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, or even daily vitamins, introducing unknown herbal compounds is playing Russian roulette with your biochemistry. Herbs can dramatically alter how your body metabolises medications. They can:

  • Making a standard dose of blood pressure, thyroid, or diabetes medication dangerously potent.
  • Blocking your body's ability to absorb vital medications, including birth control, immunosuppressants, or antidepressants.
  • Forcing your liver’s detoxification pathways to process multiple competing compounds simultaneously, leading to organ strain or toxicity.

A responsible, ethical health practitioner will always ask for a complete list of your current medications and supplements before recommending any supplement.

What Ethical Practice Actually Looks Like

Transparency is the foundation of safe healthcare. You have a right to know every single ingredient that enters your body (this goes true for medication as well).

A practitioner operating with integrity will always:

  1. Provide the exact names of every herb or supplement they recommend.
  2. Share a complete, readable ingredients list, including any casings, binders, or bases.
  3. Check for known contraindications against your medical history, health conditions, and current medications

And if they do not have the clinical tools or training to check for complex drug-herb interactions? They should not guess. An ethical practitioner will openly say that this needs to be checked by your GP or pharmacist. Which is not what most people want to hear, but if you are taking prescribed medication, this is an absolute must!

How to Protect Yourself as a Patient

If an alternative practitioner ever offers you an unlabelled pouch, a mystery tea, or a proprietary tincture without disclosing its contents, here is how to advocate for your health:

  • Ask directly: "Can you give me the full ingredient list so I can review it?"
  • Request a written summary: Ask for clear documentation of what the remedy is, why it is being recommended, and the recommended dosage.
  • Walk away if they refuse: If a practitioner claims the formula is a "secret" or refuses to give you the ingredients, do not consume it. No secret formula is worth taking the risk. (For example, I know people who have narrowly escaped a diabetic coma because they took a "natural supplement" alongside their insulin).

Your health journey should empower you with knowledge, not keep you in the dark. True healing happens when you are an informed, active partner in your care.

Hello Reader Now that we have covered the foundation of inflammation and hormones, PCOS, and perimenopause, it is time to cover menopause itself. Menopause is officially marked by a full year without a period and this is where the hormonal landscape shifts permanently. In wellness culture, menopause is often framed purely as an aging issue or something that is challenging to navigate. But the truth is, the way you feel post-menopause comes down to how well you protect your brain, bones, and...

Hello Reader Happy Monday! If you have hit your late 30s or are in your 40s and suddenly feel like your body is on fire, waking up with aching joints, sudden brain fog, skin sensitivity, or unexpected anxiety, then you are not losing your mind. You are experiencing the perimenopause flare. For decades, oestrogen acted as your body’s natural, built-in anti-inflammatory shield. As oestrogen levels begin to fluctuate and drop during perimenopause, that shield is pulled away and that can lead to...
