Social Media Science and DIY Supplementation

Hello Reader

There are so many aspects to social media that are dangerous - two of which are misrepresentation and the other being misinformation. I am going to address both of these in regards to health and wellbeing.

If you spend even a few minutes scrolling on social media, your feed will likely give you some sort of exposure to supplements. Whether its about natural GLP-1s, a protocol to lose the cortisol belly, or a special enzyme that will prevent your blood sugar from spiking.

More than likely, none of this will actually help. You will spend lots of money in hopes that this "supplement" will fix your health, and in some cases it can cause more harm than good. Nothing replaces a healthy diet and lifestyle.

As a nutritionist, lecturer, and PhD researcher, I find the sheer volume of misinformation out there deeply concerning as it has only become worse over the years. The reality is that this digital noise is doing far more harm than good for women’s health.

We have slipped into a culture of "DIY health," where complex biological systems are treated as if they can be hacked with a quick online purchase or worse when you rely solely on AI for advice. But your metabolism and endocrine system are not algorithms to be hacked. They are intricate, delicate systems that require real, evidence-based care that only real knowledge and experience can provide.

The Myth of "Natural Means Safe"

One of the most widespread pieces of misinformation online is the idea that if a product is herbal or "natural," it is automatically safe to take.

This is a dangerous misconception.

Herbal remedies contain active, potent biochemical compounds. Just like pharmaceutical medications, herbs interact directly with your liver, your kidneys, and your cellular pathways. In Ayurveda, herbs are respected as powerful medicine; they are never used carelessly or as a blanket solution for everyone.

Taking an unregulated herbal supplement just because it is labeled "natural" can put immense oxidative stress on your body, disrupt your digestive fire (Agni), and actually throw your hormones further out of sync.

Why You Should Not Take a Friend's Prescription

We have all been there. A well-meaning friend swears that a specific capsule completely cured their fatigue or cleared their adult acne, and they enthusiastically recommend you buy it.

While their intentions are pure, your response should be a gentle but firm boundary. Just because a supplement worked for someone else does not mean it belongs in your body.

Health is deeply personalised. A friend who experienced a boost in energy from a supplement might have been treating a specific tissue deficiency that you simply do not have. If your body is already holding an excess of a certain nutrient or element, introducing more of it can cause stagnation and create Ama (metabolic impurities). Let's just say that even supplementing high amounts of Vitamin D or B12 can be dangerous if not careful.

The Contraindication Crisis

I often find that on initial intake, new clients are taking five, eight, or even ten different supplements they bought online, with absolutely no idea how those pills are interacting with one another.

Supplements are an incredibly unregulated market. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, many over-the-counter vitamins and herbal formulas do not undergo rigorous, standardised testing before they hit the shelves. In my view, the supplement industry requires far tighter regulations to protect consumers from low-quality ingredients, fillers, and misleading therapeutic claims.

Before you put a single capsule into your mouth, I recommend that you answer three fundamental questions:

  1. Do I know exactly what this ingredient does inside my unique cellular pathways?
  2. Has a qualified professional checked this for contraindications?
  3. Is this something that I really need to take?

If an influencer, a friend, or an unqualified online personality recommends a supplement to you, but they lack the clinical background to cross-reference it with your medical history, your current medications, or your unique body type, then do not take it.

Mixing herbs and vitamins without checking for contraindications, especially if you are on medication, can block the absorption of vital nutrients, interact dangerously with prescribed medications, and overburden your liver.

Moving From Reactive to Proactive

You deserve to move past the noisy trends and look at your health through a clear, scientifically robust perspective. True self-management is not about collecting a shelf full of random pill bottles. It is about understanding your body’s true, foundational rhythms.

Hello Reader How are you? If you are here in the UK, I hope you are enjoying the heat! The Californian in me absolutely loves the sunshine, but even for me, there are times when it feels too hot to read or write. Today, I am writing to you from a lovely coffee shop on my local high street. It is nice and refreshing in here, and thankfully, the AC (or "air con" as the Brits call it!) isn't on full blast, which is just perfect. As I sit here with my laptop, I wanted to share an update about my...
